Great Friends Brew Alike

Here at the Lowlands Brewing Collaborative, we love bier. But it’s more than that. We live it. We even have a team of bier experts – the Brewminati – that travels the globe looking for new biers to try. In our travels, we tend to run into like-minded people who become fast friends. And some of these friends just happen to be world-class brewers. We created this collaborative to be a place where friends from around the world come together to make exciting new bier experiences for everyone to enjoy. Here are some of the friends we’ve made along the way.

Brouwerij Van Steenberge

The reason there’s a Lowlands Brewing Collaborative at all is because of our friend Jef Versele. No stranger to risk, Jef barely blinked an eye when we asked him if he’d be interested in brewing biers with us. But that may be because he’s just as crazy as us. Located in Ertvelde, just outside of Ghent, Jef’s Brouwerij Van Steenberge crafts some of the world’s best biers, including Gulden Draak, Augustijn and Piraat. He is the 7th generation of his family to run the brewery and is a founding member of the Lowlands Brewing Collaborative. We’re so glad he was crazy enough to say yes.

Brouwerij The Musketeers

While on a trip to Belgian Beer Weekend in Brussels, we made a stop in Antwerp to visit with our good friend Stefan, owner of Brouwerij The Musketeers. In a local pub, he invited us to sample the house bier that he makes – a remarkable IPA. We were floored by it and asked Stefan if he would consider crafting an IPA for us. Thank goodness for serendipity and Stefan’s bold vision, because shortly thereafter, Hollander IPA was born. Stefan’s brewery, located in Ursel, Belgium also brews the popular “Troubadour” line of Belgian biers.

Central Waters

We travel around the world looking for great biers. And when you find one, you usually discover that it’s surrounded by some pretty great people. Central Waters is no exception. Except in this case, they’re right down road from us in Amherst, WI. There, in the middle of a cornfield, our friends Anello and Paul brew some of the world’s most remarkable barrel-aged biers inside their solar-powered brewery. We were honored when they chose to collaborate with us on their first Quadrupel, in which attended the brew, tasted the wort and celebrated this first batch with them. We can’t wait to share the results with you

Door County Brewing Co.

If Wisconsin is a unique place, Door County is downright special. The “thumb” of our great state juts out into the fifth-largest freshwater lake in the world, like a hitchhiker trying to catch a ride to the local tavern. If you’re ever near Bailey’s Harbor, that ride may land you at Door County Brewing Co., where you’d be warmly welcomed by our friends the McMahon family and their crew of peninsular bier-slingers. Known for their Belgian and French farmhouse style ales, they were the perfect collaborator to craft our Summer17 Saison, the inaugural bier of our Seasonal Saison Series.

Perennial Artisan Ales

In the long shadows of a macro-brewing juggernaut and a 630-foot arch, a small, artisanal microbrewery has been carving out a unique niche in the American craft market, with a focus on Belgian style ales and a unique barrel aging program. From the first time we tried one of Perennial’s biers we knew we had to meet whoever was behind such sorcery. We’re glad we did and even happier to have been able to collaborate with our new St. Louisan friends on our Fall17 Saison, the second installation of our Seasonal Saison Series.

Hacienda Beer Co.

Birthed from the same doors as Door County Brewing, Hacienda Beer Company is the McMahon family’s newest venture, and an adventure it is. True pioneers from beard to boots, we knew from the moment father-son brewing team Danny and John mentioned their plans to push for a new venue to create edgier and exciting takes on classic biers that this would be the perfect next phase for our Seasonal Saison Series. Fun fact: Hacienda is just the 4th brewery in all of Wisconsin to own a koelschip (or, coolship) in which to make spontaneously fermented biers. Which is crazy, because not only is this piece of equipment extremely rare in the US, they’re even rare in Belgium where they gained their fame!

Whiner Beer Company

When the cat-loving and wine barrel-aging Siebel Institute and World Brewing Academy grads from Whiner Beer Co. long boarded into our lives, we knew we had to add them to our list of collaborators. This spring they’ve whipped us up a phenomenal Saison that’s everything we could’ve hoped for from the Wallonian-born, Craft-adapted farmhouse style–and a little bit more. Expertly dry-hopped and playfully anointed with soft, lingering notes of honey and 10 lbs of fresh peaches per barrel, it’s at once crisp and memorable, bright and mouth watering, with balanced fruit, citrus, bitterness, and fragrant aromatics from its delicate and varied hop profile as well as zest from 40 lemons and 40 oranges. In short–it’s sunshine falling on a peach orchard busy with bees and still wet with morning dew. But. Like. In a glass. And you can drink it.

Good City Brewing

For a unique, seasonal bier series that celebrates film in Milwaukee, we sought out some friends who feel as strongly as we do about creating an engaging, storied and satisfying experience for our local community: Good City Brewing, and Milwaukee Film. There’s a certain romance to a truly great movie that we just can’t help likening to what a makes good bier great: a balance of art, craft, passion, and story. You’ll find it in every sip of our Now Playing bier series, brewed by our good friends at Good City Brewing.
